I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with best-selling children’s book author Krystaelynne Sanders Diggs. I met Krystaelynne at the San Francisco Writers Conference and got to hear a little bit of her story and knew I wanted to find a way to share it with more authors.

What makes Krystaelynne so unique is that being a children’s book author is her full time job, and she’s managed to do it all without a traditional publisher backing her. What’s her secret? She didn’t start out looking to become a successful children’s book author.

When a child close to her opened up about being a victim of abuse, Krystaelynne decided she wanted to help this child heal from the experience. That journey culminated with Krystaelynne writing and self-publishing her first children’ book, Where Hands Go: The Introduction to Safe and Unsafe Touch as a way to talk about body safety with children.

At the time, Krystaelynne said the book wasn’t something she planned to share with the world.

“It wasn’t really for the world,” she said. “It was mostly for myself and the little child within me and for my family.”

But soon the book took on a life of its own as people started finding and purchasing it. Several months after the book launched, Krystaelynne realized she needed to start sharing her own story about how the book came to life.

“I started sharing my story in hopes it would prevent other people from going through what my family had gone through,” she said. “Sharing that [story] on social media launched me into the world of being an author.”

Eventually Krystaelynne was able to quit her job to write books full time and continue to share her passion for helping children, healing her own inner child, and creating diverse books for her son and other children. While her books have been wildly successful, she has never lost sight of her reason for writing.

“I still actively write and share with the world in hopes it resonates with another family and if it doesn’t that’s okay,” she said. “But I keep writing to see the stories that pour from my heart in illustration form.”

Krystaelynne’s passion for helping children and her willingness to be vulnerable is ultimately what has led to her success as an author, and I was thrilled she was willing to share her story with us in hopes it inspires other mission-driven authors to write and publish their own stories.

In this interview we discuss:
